TITLE:”THE PERFECT WEDDING”
(Introduction) “Women, he had many, even though lately he is more interested in rock and surf instead of sex. But, Anthony Kiedis, has always had only interrupted loves. There’s only one relationship he managed to keep.”

He sees me worried, and immediately he reassures me :”I’m fine,it was just an intestinal virus.” We’re in Malibu, in a villa by the ocean that looks like a (movie) set,and Anthony Kiedis is sitting on an armchair in his huge bedroom, after a quick hospital recovery, that forced him to cancel two concerts. He speaks slowly in low voice, drinking green tea, (“it’s good for our voice, the opposite of cheese, which it’s very bad for us singers”). He’s getting ready for the promotion and the tour of The Getaway, the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, which will be out on 17 June, after five years from I’m With You. Introduced by the single Dark Necessities, the album has a new producer, Danger Mouse, who takes the place of Rick Rubin, the person Red Hot Chili Peppers have to thank for many of their successes. “as long as we are actual, and not a repetition of ourselves, we will go on.”,says Kiedis drinking some more tea. The other new, since some years,it’s about Anthony’s private life :53 and never married, a passion for young models, in 2007, his first son was born,Everly Bear. The mother’s name is Heathery Christie: Anthony and her, broke up when the kid was 3.After that, the Australian Helena Vestergaard came along, but it ended with her as well. The new one, I think is named Wanessa Milhomem, twenty-two years old, Brazilian. Despite of that “round dance” of women,Anthony is a single father :”Everly lives with me, the mother sees him regularly, but I’m the one who shares his everyday things,I bring him to school, I help him doing homeworks”.

HOW WAS IT, WITH THE NEW PRODUCER?
It was hard. When we asked to Brian (real name of Danger Mouse), to produce us, we had already ready 20 songs that were good for us, but that he didn’t like. It was a shock: when you work on a song for a long time, you become affectionate to it,you lose lucidity, and you don’t understand if it works, anymore. But Brian wanted something different, so we said :if we work with him, we need to follow him. we trusted him with his method, which consists in composing every day, in studio, new music.

TO WHICH SONG DID YOU GET AFFECTIONATE?
One for Robin Williams’ death. Robin was special, his energy was contagious, when he left, I felt real pain. He had psychological problems, but he was hiding his suffering. He kept going until the pain was unbearable, then he left. I don’t blame him, I just forgive him.

IN THE RECORD, YOU SING ABOUT THE END OF A LOVE STORY :
In almost all the tracks.while I was “writing” the record, I had dark moments, I had to get over the two year relationship with Helena, who I loved a lot,and which I would have spent my whole life with . The relationship didn’t work anymore, and I didn’t understand how it was possible, even though you love somebody so much, you can’t be happy together. I still don’t understand it now.

WHEN AN ARTIST SUFFERS, IS HE MORE INSPIRED?
When the relationship ended, I thought: I wasted two years of my life. Then a friend made me notice that without it, I wouldn’t have composed these songs :something good, came out of it.

BUT IF YOU LOVED HER SO MUCH, WHY DIDN’T YOU MARRY HER.
I don’t know, to me, that piece of paper doesn’t have much of a value.
For sure I was really attached to her.

INSTEAD, WITH THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, IT’S LASTING MORE THEN 30 YEARS :BEING IN A BAND, ISN’T THAT LIKE BEING MARRIED?
Yes, me and Flea are married since 35 years. But we don’t live together, we both have our own space, we don’t spend 24 hours on 24 under the same roof.Maybe that’s the secret :being married, but both living in our own house. Actually, I don’t even know how is it lasting, putting together our personalities, and our egoisms. Sometimes we fight and scream, sometimes we hug each other. What is never missing,is respect for each others.

HOW DID, BEING A FATHER, CHANGED YOU?
Being with Everly, is the thing that I want mostly in the world. I’ve never loved anybody as much as him. Even just watching him sleeping, makes me happy. I feed him, I make him feel safe, but the love that comes back, is a thousand times bigger.

BEING THE SON OF A CELEBRITY SOMETIMES CAN BE HARD. DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT THAT?
My son says :”Dad,you’re famous. The guys at school, talk about you.” Then I explain him that dad is just doing a job, and that fame is nothing:first of all , I’m a musician, not a rockstar.I explain him, that he also need to understand what he likes, and work hard. I try not to spoil him.

AND WHEN, GROWING UP, HE WILL BE CURIOUS ABOUT ALCOHOL AND DRUGS?
This scares me. I just hope that if he will want to experiment, he’s gonna do it with situations and substances that won’t be too bad.

ARE YOU GONNA TELL HIM ABOUT YOUR PAST ADDICTION?
Of course. I hope that seeing me clean like I am, he will understand the right thing to do.

NOW THAT YOU’RE A FATHER, DO YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR FATHER?
My dad is the person that mostly influenced me,in a good, or bad way. I’ve learned a lot from his mistakes. For example, I don’t want my son to grow too fast. I did everything too soon :I’ve smoked at 11, had sex at 14,did drugs at 16.instead, I’d like my son to be a child for the longest time possible.

IN 2012 YOU BECAME PART OF THE ROCK ‘N ROLL HALL OF FAME, A HONOUR THAT USUALLY GOES TO BANDS THAT ARE NOT ACTIVE ANYMORE :DID YOU FEEL HAPPY, OR “OLD”?
It was a special moment, my thoughts went to who wasn’t with us anymore, over all Hillel Slovak (-guitarist, dead because of heroin, in 1988-), but also to Dave Navarro (-guitarist, fired from the band in 1998-). I thought it was important to honour them. About the rest, we still have a lot to give, and we want the world to know that.

SEX,DRUGS AND ROCK ‘N ROLL. HOW MUCH OF THIS IS ACTUALLY IN YOUR LIFE,TODAY ?
Rock, every day, more times in a day.

SEX?
Less then before, now I do it just when I’m in love.
When I was younger, I experimented, now it’s different. About drugs, my only one is surf. I don’t use substances anymore, waves are the thing that gives me adrenaline.

YOU’RE 53,BUT IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE YOU ARE. HOW OLD DO YOU FEEL?
It depends from the moments. Some days, I feel 100 years old. But when I’m doing surf, it’s like I’m 20.

A rough transcript:

«ln quasi tutti i pezzi.
Sesso, droga e rock and roll.
Sesso?
«Dipende dai momenti.
Many thanks to Simona for this magazine!
