Mit “I Could Die For You” geht es ruhig und balladesk weiter. Dennoch einer der eher durchschnittlichen Songs von “By The Way”. Ein solches Album soll im Vorbeigehen geschrieben worden sein, `by the way of touring` sozusagen? Das ist nur schwer vorstellbar. Chad relativiert diesen Eindruck: “Der Ausdruck `by the way` ist interpretationsfreudig. Es ging um Ideale – Rocker gegen Hippies, you know. By The Way” beim Hören zwangsläufig in Gang setzt. Was immer mir an großartigen Dingen widerfahren ist, kam völlig unvorhergesehen. “I love it. Jahrhundert in Upstate New York wie wild Indianer gevögelt.

London, Spring 1988. Four stark naked freaks from California crossing the famous zebra crossing in front of the Abbey Road Studios. Your law is the radio, her mentor and producer, George Clinton means. But still burning, the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS more of the sexual abuse of tennis socks to mind than by musical references to the Fab Four from Liverpool. This is after nearly 20 years in business, seven worn guitar, dramatic escapades of heroin and more than 26 million records sold all a bit different.
Santa Monica, May 6 2002nd The record company of the Red Hot Chili Peppers wants to make the unavoidable circumstances surrounding an album release as pleasant as possible. To this end, we have an entire floor of the spacious hotel directly hired on the Pacific, to supply the international press with first impressions of the new album “By The Way” and a dozen interviews. At least for Anthony Kiedis no end seems in sight of this marathon – again and again he peeps into the room, listening in which writers from around the world the new songs on the album on a small PA and eager to take notes. The cigarette smoke makes him fall back quickly. Kiedis respects, like all his band colleagues, now much on his health. Flea and John Frusciante loll on the hotel corridor around and giggle. Drummer Chad Smith is the calm in person. Everyone looks healthy and happy, which, given the drugs past the band a reason to rejoice. Another reason to be happy are the eleven new songs that were released today to the acoustic enjoyment. “Pleasure” because “By The Way” will be probably the quietest to date, and melodious album of the simplest Chili Peppers. At least this is the first impression – five more songs are, according to management at this time in work. Later, Anthony Kiedis insure that the title track and opener By “The Way” is not the only song will be harder on the album. Said keeps track stylistically on “Warped”, the opener of the “One Hot Minute” album, a heavy, funky beats a verse in the face, Kiedis at full throttle. The track was also the first single, it betrays us – knowing that they will be burning with this rather typical Peppers song nothing. That was then first in terms of hard funk. “Cabron” is a distinctive, spiced with Hawaiian guitar track. The song reminds phenomenal to the doctors, which is of course pure coincidence. “Coltrane” begins with a jaunty verse and is framed by a multi-voiced sing-along chorus. The Beatles greet lasssen. “Do not Forget Me” begins with four slow bass chords that form the backbone of the stanza. Kiedis’ vocal melody slightly reminiscent of “Otherside” from the last album has been missed in the mix but the timbre of an old jukebox. Striking here is how minimalist the input of John Frusciante is back held – three tones for a guitar solo in this case all you need is the song. The number effect on the first impression a bit sleepy, but later reveals itself as a potential after-burner. “Epic” is a song that is so, what’s his name. Epic, worn, compared to “Do not Forget Me” actually elaborated. The acoustic guitar picking of the intro is decorated with strange flanger effect and after Walstimmen sounding sounds. In the middle of the song turns suddenly and by Frusciante strumming a – really hard – on his acoustic guitar riff down. The beatleske influence, which was already visible in the other tracks, is now obvious. With “I Could Die For You” is more quiet and ballad. Anthony Kiedis has become bolder in terms of his vocals. He dares somersaults in pitches that could have been let dizzy. The Mellotron track in the background gives the song a Seventies feel, which is supported by the slightly more progressive tinged middle section. In “Loop” (where the working title) is one vocally almost always two or mehrstimming go. The chorus is angelic beautiful or extremely schmaltzy – just how you look at it then. The gentlest and yet most fragile song with definite Love & Peace-aura. “Midnight”, however, will begin with a simple-held strings intro, followed by a dark, spooky verse. The song opens towards the end like “Epic”. The “Ska Song” (also still a working title) is the first song a bit more lively after the opener. The punk-inspired chorus is chasing a cheeky harmonica. The track looks a bit too long, because after the second chorus really says it all. “Universally Speaking” is there a welcome change of course. In the intro, there are bell-sounds, as we know them from pop candy á la Cardigans. Again, this Beatles-like, polyphonic vocals. This song is consistently ahead, the flight through the universe have been implemented well musically. Even here, only a minimal Frusciante input. “Warm Tape” finally makes his rhythmic vocals put a strange impression. All the more is the catchy chorus. However, one of the more average songs on “By The Way”. The first conclusion: At first go do not want so many spontaneous recognizable set `hits` like on “Californication.” Nevertheless, “By The Way” in itself an organic unity, in which one has just exchanged a few decibels for a few tunes. Few journalists remain seated for a second (or third) listening test. This can have very practical reasons, because the schedule is tight. The idea sprang from the assembly line to the scarcity of good `time`. Similarly, in this interview day. Half an hour with Chad Smith and Anthony Kiedis are granted VISIONS. That’s a lot. It is still wasting nothing of what the “By The Way” seemingly unlimited supply is: peace and time. Chad Smith is pleased with this interpretation. This could be because Smith is basically like looking forward. “See, that’s the great thing about music: the variety with which it is perceived. For you it is quiet, for someone else it is exciting, peaceful for the next, for some it is against angry. We simply write the songs in the atmosphere in which we are now and are honest about our feelings during that moment. Each of our albums is a snapshot of the point at which we find ourselves. ” The instrumental part of the song was not created in some quiet retirement, but was mostly written on tour, told the gigantic drummer. Then we indulged in a few months time off to recharge the batteries and then went to the end of last summer to work. Such an album is to be written in passing, `by the way of touring ‘so to speak? This is difficult to imagine. Chad qualifies this impression: “The term` by the way is `interpretationsfreudig. It can express casualness, a sentence beginning with` to `the way. But it must not be so. How about, for example with` By the way, was yesterday my arm `amputated – that would be no casual thing for me,” Chad laughs at his thigh knocker. Rather, it was become a tradition with the album titles: “We have spent the last ten years the albums by one of the songs named. In` Californication was `it an eponymous song on` One Hot Minute ‘and and’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik ‘It was the same. Wow, a knitting pattern for the Chili Peppers, who would have thought it??, “laughs Chad. Indeed. But knitting patterns can also be a practical matter, if they help to speed things up. “Californication” was created mulated during the breathtakingly short period of three weeks, while for “One Hot Minute” comparatively long time spent in the studio. Still shines “Californication” infinitely more leisure and maturity than its predecessor. If it is ultimately the more qualitative factors in the band structure and environment than quantitative, that make a difference? Chad: “Absolutely. I can not really say how long we needed for this album, because the process of songwriting, and of relaxing was a smooth transition often. However, I know that everything went very easy and relaxed, as in” One Hot Minute “was not the case. I think we are now in the most creative phase, since John is back in the band. It is a great esteem for him and us there. Meanwhile, we also know how it without John is. ” Frusciante’s activities as a solo artist should emphasize what he has creative relevance for the Chili Peppers. Even if the crash were several years during his heroin addiction in the resulting two well-received solo albums controversial, with the last year released third album “To Record Only Water For Ten Days” Frusciante of reentry into the stratosphere is well managed. In the spring of 2002 also appeared a fourth album “ called “From The Sounds Inside” on Frusciante’s website. For the love of his fans that he determined himself the title of the virtual plant. Frusciante appears before creative power only as overflow – as much as is its role as a songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers? “Well, John is a songwriter. We contribute to all the songs. This makes them what they are: songs with a lot of personality. Maybe makes something special of our music – the drums have as much expressive power as the guitar and the bass. All pieces are important. It makes it so satisfying to me. ” John’s guitar playing seems to “By The Way” even more minimalist than it previously was the case anyway. How long it will take to the man contributes only silence? Chad is the idea not so far-fetched: “Even the sounds probably still good if John does it. I think that his inner silence is his secret. We need simply no egobezogenen ambition more in this band. We have as an artist, individuals are not longer necessary. Perhaps the secret of a good song not so different from the formula for success in life back to himself: Take a step and serve the whole. Then the ego is happy about it again. ” And when the ego really happy, it wants to share their joy. The Chili Peppers were never at a loss for concrete acts of charity, no matter whether this is more obligatory charity events like the Tibetan Freedom Concert or original action, launched in 1999 as the initiative against violence in schools. Shortly before the “Californication” release the massacre at Columbine High School shocked Littleton in the Americas. Spontaneously organized the Peppers mini-shows at American High Schools, and the `ticket` constructive suggestions were used by the students on how to curb the hate in schools. As this action subsequently be evaluated? Chad, himself a father of two, recalls: “The events in Littleton were then a major issue in the U.S.. Just as now in Germany – I have heard that something similar is happening with you. Well, we do not need it maintain that neither nor Slipknot Marilyn Manson still AC / DC video games still bring their own kids to kill other kids. My impression at that time to this initiative was that the kids today are rootless, because they feel even more self-cohesion among themselves as I was in high school, there was at least still gangs, which it is joined. We have also had fights, but there it was not about killing. It was about ideals – Rocker against hippies, you know. If the kids today want to prove, that means a gun zuzulegen. ” When asked whether he had the feeling that they have brought something with the initiative, followed by short silence. “Yes – first of all itself, for me, I realized how vulnerable our society has become. Littleton is located not in some slums, it is a good area. The kids were not really involved with patent recipes, but rather use the action to their to make emotions air. It might not look like a solution, they only assure each other how awesome the violence in schools. But it has broken the ice. The kids started to call their anxiety by name. This resulted in discussions with parents and teachers – that the persons with whom the contact was broken off for so long. Peppers Linked to a gig and the fun that brings with it the common slopes, have the students dealt with the issue in a more positive way . I think the action was successful, the response was certainly far more positive than the approaches of some politicians. ” That was already Chads last word, because Mrs. record company shows us clearly the two-minute finger. How he felt in view of the forthcoming 20th anniversary of the band, Chad is still describe quickly. “To be honest, I’m hardly thinking about it. The only people who remind me of it, are you journalists (laughs). Seriously, it’s great. How many bands can be found out there that are still relevant after 20 years? U2 perhaps. Or Metallica. It’s nice to be part of this circle, without need to tell it. ” Now is the end. Time for the flying change. Anthony Kiedis is a difficult fellow. As an interesting, as it must be added. Kiedis captures his suite without paying tribute to another Attending a glance. He wants a cup of tea and sits down. His manner to demand from the beginning of the conversation at the highest level of attention and concentration, because the more surprising. All this does half as strange, if you simply open challenge. Constant eye contact is on this duty. The not further defined heaviness in the air can quickly become uncomfortable pauses. A strange situation that has more of a duel than a cultivated conversation. Especially if you would like to focus on the heart qualities, the “By The Way” at the hearing inevitably sets in motion. Personality out, Diva, her affectations – Kiedis’ singing is better and more soulful than ever before. It seems that he add the spiritual face of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the perfect make-up. However, without celebrating this aspect of the public as clearly as his colleagues, John and Flea doing today in front of other journalists. While Frusciante in the nineties out of necessity, out of his addiction with regular yoga practice began, and Flea, inspired by producer Rick Rubin and father figure, the Transcendental Meditation learned, Kiedis went from there to make his border experience in the outside world. Adventure travel in the jungle, an audience with the Dalai Lama in India, his passionate motorcycling and not least his (failed) love affairs brought Kiedis other means to a very similar goal. The meditative aura, in songs like for example “Loop” stops, Kiedis does so also less due to awareness techniques in the broad sense, as to the fate of himself: “I meditate myself hardly. At least not as regularly as other members of this band. In theory, meditate I should, because it is the best thing you can do with his head. But this happens to me more chance, without me I undertake. Unfortunately, not often enough. In the bathtub, for example. Ultimately, I’m an asshole too large to meditate regularly. I’m just too busy with the wrong things, always in a hurry. This is a real problem. ” When standing it in the screenplay, Anthony’s cell phone rings in his black denim jacket. It follows a handle in the bag, which closes the ring and will be repeated from now on, every five minutes. “My priorities lie too much on things that are loud bang and,” Anthony says with a straight face. “But it’s good that I was again reminded of what is important. Thank you.” Not a few even sing in the bath, it goes through my head. However, I save the comment. The relatively quiet nature of the new album is undeniable, however, hardly. It goes further audible, as the on “Californication” has already became apparent. Anthony agrees in principle, but points to the impact that John had it: “John has the talent to achieve a meditative state when he makes music. I mean, after all, meditation is a broad field. This energy flows through our songs . If you play or sing, then you think in that moment nothing else in this world. This is the same effect as the silence that we learn through a mantra. You think of nothing except what you are doing or is. ” The phone rings. No problem. Anthony keeps the thread: “Music has a meditative side. There When I sing in the studio or in rehearsal, because it only this one moment for me. One does not need to practice meditation in order to experience positive emotions. If my Volume hear play, it drives me so in the direction of … cosmic love. ” Love. The keyword that the Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis probably will have relevance in any of their musical aggregation. On “By The Way”: “Many of these songs are inspired by my girlfriend who unfortunately is no longer my friend. The separation from her was very sad and I think it brought a lot of intense feelings on this album. But other things have contributed – I’m glad to be alive, I’m happy to be sober. I can make music. All this bubbles up and creates foaming love in me. ” The creative process is designed for Anthony, however, unlike the rest of the band, which was simply in the nature-friendly role of a singer and lyricist. Anthony recalls: “Until a year ago I had written a single line of this album. At this time I went to Hawaii and took some raw footage from early rehearsals with there. The lyrics were there in late summer and autumn of last year. I was in different moods, the whole range of emotions of a relationship was involved, and I was very happy after I met my girlfriend, but we went through quite severe highs and lows. Nevertheless, we were together and supported us. That was inspiring for me because it aroused hope in me. It’s hard to say what has influenced this album mainly because there were so many changes in so short a time. ” Often one feels a mix of emotions as more interesting and intense as clear and simple feelings … “Yes, that’s right. For the highs are sometimes deep, and the depths have something of heights. Even the sadness has something great in itself, if it has a specific meaning for you. You are even happy to be able to feel them, for that shows how much you love the other. It’s so not that they died young or something. She lives, and it is fortunate to be able to feel the pain of such a loss. Love is a multidimensional phenomenon. It fascinates one – regardless of whether it is uphill or into the abyss. ” Anthony has hit it so dreadful. How well that his cell phone rings, and distracts from the tiresome topic. Whether he would find happiness boring, is the question. Artists of all ages have in suffering, finally found the greatest inspiration, even if the rarest in the cases of their intention. Anthony thinks for a moment and says, “I can not answer because I am never long enough lucky to be bored of it (laughs). But then I am not looking to torture me even more than the universe set me. It sends me enough of them to let me grow. I do not need any extras as inspiration. (laugh) As for the importance of creativity, it is probably suffering and happiness in his combination. If it were only one of them – that would be really boring. ” The universe. It has shown Anthony not always the best side of life. However, Kiedis talks about the heavenly powers as a trusted friend. Is this an accurate picture? “Yes, but a friend whose behavior I never could have foreseen. Whatever happened to me great things came completely unexpectedly. Even if I would write a wish list, they would never be as exciting as what has planned the universe. I had never planned that John would return to us. The universe would have it but so. One can not plan things. Although – perhaps some things. I imagine it currently, for example, very exciting to start a family. ” Exciting – yes. As for the planning, I have to take Anthony, however, the wind from their sails. For in things children usually do not ask friends universe after the spiritual welfare of the prospective parents. The life with children is opposed to a carefully planned daily routine often diametrically opposed. However, it is a very special, because independent of external things joy. Anthony thaws significantly: “That’s true. Also as far as the money. My family had absolutely no coal, when I was little. However, I had a very good childhood. Tons of love, a mother and a father who is very much to us because was. We were really poor, but which played no role at all. It took us rather by getting them to create fun things myself. This is a skill that many kids often lack. I know many such examples from the city. If an all- is given, you do not learn to create something themselves. ” And how it feels to be filthy rich now? “I love it. I’ve known the difference. But I admit that I’m very spoiled by money. Sometimes I wonder how it would be to lose all that again and to live in a tiny apartment. I would probably so clear. But I have no ambition in this regard (laughs). I’m used to the wealth, but see it as lucky to have met both sides. ” Anthony stressed how much he had shaped his family. The same applies to the ancestors, he has never met: “I have among other Lithuanian ancestors, my grandfather, come from there. About two years ago but I learned from a family tree that I wear also blood from the trunk of the Mohicans in me; My French ancestors probably in the 17th century in upstate New York like wild Indians fucked. So far I only had a couple of tribal tattoos and a bit of interest in Indian culture. Now I know why I so love the forest and love to run . It is probably only to the corresponding genes. ” Anthony is striking that the amulet shows the sign of Scorpio at his necklace with the wrong side of the front. When he turns round to reveal many beautiful rhinestones on it. How significant of the change that has placed opposite my during the few minutes of our meeting on the day, and finally we talk briefly about the fact that astrology is not really bullshit can be when the moon because the ocean every day outside the door twice is in motion. I am looking forward to someday reunite with Kiedis. If more time is.
